Preliminary tax

How much preliminary tax should I pay?

To avoid interest, pay the lower of 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's tax by 31 October. If you pay by direct debit, 105% of the tax from two years ago is also accepted. We work out the lowest safe amount for you.

  • 90% of this year's tax

Based on an estimate of the tax you expect to owe for the current year.

  • 100% of last year's tax

Based on the final tax bill for the previous year.

  • 105% of the year before last

Only where you pay by direct debit.

FAQ

Form 11 questions

When is the Form 11 deadline?+

The return and preliminary tax for the previous year are due by 31 October. If you file and pay through ROS, Revenue usually allows a later date in mid-November.

What happens if I file my tax return late?+

A surcharge is added to your tax bill: 5% if the return is less than two months late, rising to 10% after that, plus interest on any tax paid late. Filing on time, even if you can't pay in full straight away, avoids the surcharge.

Can I claim a refund for previous years?+

Yes. You can generally claim tax credits and reliefs for the previous four years. We check earlier years when we prepare your return.

I'm a director paid through payroll. Do I still file?+

Yes. Proprietary directors are chargeable persons and file a Form 11 every year, even when all of their pay has already been taxed through PAYE.
