Picking accounting software Ireland businesses can rely on is not just about a tidy dashboard. Your package needs to handle Irish VAT rates and returns, connect to your bank, work with your payroll, and be ready for the structured e-invoicing Revenue is phasing in.
This guide compares three of the most widely used cloud options for small Irish companies: Xero Ireland, QuickBooks Ireland and Sage Ireland. We focus on features rather than prices, since subscription plans change often, and we have no commercial relationship with any of these vendors.
What Irish small companies need from accounting software
Before comparing brands, be clear on what the software must do for an Irish limited company:
Irish VAT: handle the Irish rates, produce the figures for your VAT3 and Return of Trading Details (RTD), and support the cash or invoice basis as appropriate.
Bank feeds: import transactions automatically from your business bank, so reconciliation is quick.
Payroll: if you run payroll, it must report to Revenue in real time under PAYE Modernisation, either within the package or through a linked app.
Invoicing: produce invoices that meet Revenue's VAT invoice requirements.
Records: keep an audit trail that supports the directors' duty to keep adequate books of account, stored for the six years Revenue expects.
One point applies to all three: none of them is a substitute for ROS. You will still use ROS for filing, directly or through your agent. Our guide to your first VAT return explains the VAT3 and RTD process.
Xero Ireland
Xero is a cloud-only platform popular with Irish accountants and bookkeepers.
Strengths
- Strong bank reconciliation, with direct bank feeds available for major Irish banks such as AIB and Bank of Ireland.
- Invoicing, online payments, expense claims and purchase orders built in.
- A large app marketplace, which is how Xero handles several Irish-specific needs.
Things to know
- Payroll is not built in for Ireland. Xero asks you to connect a third-party payroll app from its app store.
- Irish VAT3 preparation for upload to ROS is offered through an integrated partner app rather than natively in the core product.
Best suited to: businesses happy to build a small "stack" of connected apps, and those whose accountant already works in Xero.
QuickBooks Ireland
QuickBooks Online is Intuit's cloud product, with a dedicated Irish version.
Strengths
- Bank feeds, automatic expense categorisation and receipt capture.
- Invoicing designed around getting paid faster, plus inventory tracking and purchase orders.
- VAT tracking and reports for Irish VAT3 and RTD figures, with support for cash and standard accounting.
Things to know
- You prepare the VAT return in QuickBooks, but you file it yourself on ROS and then record the payment back in the software.
- Payroll is not built into the Irish version. You will need a separate payroll product that integrates with it.
Best suited to: product-based businesses and owners who want an intuitive interface and stock tracking in one place.
Sage Ireland
Sage has a long history in Ireland and offers both cloud and desktop products, including Sage Accounting (cloud), Sage 50 Accounts and Sage Payroll.
Strengths
- Sage Accounting covers invoicing, cash flow, VAT and bank feeds.
- Sage Payroll is Revenue-compliant and submits to Revenue directly, with automatic journal posting into Sage Accounting.
Things to know
- Sage Accounting calculates the VAT return, but you submit it to Revenue through ROS rather than from inside the software.
- The product range is wider, so make sure you choose the edition that suits your size.
Best suited to: companies that want accounting and Irish payroll from a single vendor.

E-invoicing readiness
Ireland is introducing mandatory e-invoicing in phases. Revenue's published plan is:
- November 2028: VAT-registered large corporates must use e-invoicing and real-time reporting for domestic business-to-business (B2B) transactions.
- November 2029: the obligation extends to all VAT-registered businesses trading B2B cross-border within the EU.
- July 2030: EU-wide ViDA requirements apply to all cross-border EU B2B transactions.
E-invoices must follow the European standard EN 16931 in a structured data format, and PDFs will no longer count. Even before your own phase, you will need to be able to receive e-invoices from larger customers and suppliers. Ask any vendor how and when they will support this. Our guide to the Irish e-invoicing mandate covers the detail.
How to choose accounting software in Ireland
When comparing accounting software Ireland options, keep it practical:
- Ask your accountant. Using the same software as your bookkeeper saves time and fees.
- Count your needs. Payroll, stock and multi-currency all narrow the choice.
- Test with real data. Use a trial or introductory offer to check bank feeds and invoicing.
- Decide who does the work. Software does not do the bookkeeping for you. Our comparison of DIY bookkeeping vs outsourcing can help you decide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best accounting software in Ireland for a small company?
There is no single best accounting software Ireland answer. Xero suits those who like connected apps, QuickBooks suits product-based firms wanting stock tracking, and Sage suits those wanting accounting and Irish payroll from one vendor. Choose based on your needs and what your accountant uses.
Can Xero Ireland file my VAT return directly to Revenue?
Xero Ireland does not file the VAT3 natively. Xero offers Irish VAT3 preparation through an integrated partner app that generates returns for upload to ROS. Check the current options with Xero, as integrations change.
Does QuickBooks Ireland include payroll?
No. QuickBooks Ireland does not include built-in payroll. You will need a separate payroll product that reports to Revenue under PAYE Modernisation. Check that your chosen payroll app integrates with QuickBooks.
Is Sage Ireland cloud-based or desktop?
Sage Ireland offers both. Sage Accounting is cloud-based, while Sage 50 Accounts is a longer-established product. Sage Payroll integrates with Sage Accounting, which appeals to companies wanting one vendor for accounts and payroll.
Will my accounting software be ready for e-invoicing?
Ask your vendor directly. Revenue's plan starts with large corporates in November 2028 and extends to VAT-registered businesses trading B2B within the EU from November 2029. E-invoices must meet the EN 16931 standard, so check each vendor's roadmap before you commit.
